Shelma Jun
she/they
@shelmatic

Shelma grew up rather venturesome in California skinning knees on skateboards and raging on her snowboard through terrain parks. Though she was captain of her high school’s first women’s water polo team, it is ultimately through climbing that she found her girl crew. When she started climbing after a shoulder surgery sidelined her from other sports, she didn't expect to find the strong, passionate group of females that would inspire her to start Flash Foxy, a climbing community that brings together hundreds of self-identified women every year at women’s climbing festivals.

Based in Brooklyn, Shelma’s advocacy work through events, writing and films intertwine her desires to create opportunities for women to support one another, work in partnership with other grassroots initiatives to amplify the voices of underrepresented folks and honour Indigenous connections to the places we recreate in through land acknowledgment.

Guided Community Climb Day

sponsored by OUT In The Wild

Open to all skill levels

Has existential dread been getting you down lately?

Come climb it out with Patrick Dunn and OUT in the Wild for a guided day of climbing, hanging out, and spending time outside with other queer folks.

It's designed to be welcoming for everyone—from first-timers to experienced crushers who just want a fun day out.

Top ropes will be set up on routes ranging from 5.0–5.10+, so there will be something for everypne. Guides will be there to help with technique, belaying, and getting everyone on the wall safely.

@out_inthewild

Hailing from the infamous beaches of New Jersey, Patrick moved to the west coast in search of adventure and queer community.

After struggling to find queer community in the outdoors, he started OUT in the Wild to create a space for 2SLGBTQIA+ folks to connect with each other, learn new skills and experience the magic of climbing outside. You can find him at his home crag of Smith Rock clipping bolts or jamming splitter cracks in the lower gorge.

Patrick has been climbing for 20 years and started guiding in 2019. Through guiding he loves to share his passion for climbing and the outdoors. In his spare time, he is also an artist and amateur chef!

Jordan Cannon
he/him/his
@cannonjtc

Jordan’s love and appreciation for climbing spawns from the true freedom he has found through the sport. As a kid, Jordan didn’t have physical access to climbs, but that didn’t stop him from stemming every doorway and scaling every tree he could find, imagining them as routes. Once he actually touched real rock, he took to climbing like a fish to water and has never taken a single day on rock for granted.

Jordan is revered by his elders for his work ethic and respect for climbing. His strength lies in his clean classic style, courteous temperament and meticulous packing. If you ever get a chance to climb with Jordan, know that he will happily wait for you if you are slow, but you better have your bag packed the night before.

Rock Rescue Skills

$120 USD
Intermediate Climbing Safety

Self rescue refers to skills that climbing partners use to help each other and themselves if something goes wrong. Whether you're a top rope hero or venturing into multi pitch terrain, rescue skills are essential to being safer and more self-sufficient in the outdoors.

This clinic covers self-rescue using common equipment climbers carry on a day out. We'll work hands-on to address the most common rescue scenarios, using skills like ascending a rope, assisting a stuck climber from above and below, escaping the belay, rappel techniques, and more.

Pre-requisites:
•  Knows how to tie into the rope for climbing
•  Can independently perform safety checks before climbing
•  Capable of comfortably climbing 5.8 while on a top rope
•  Proficient top rope belayer with tube style (ATC) or assisted braking (GriGri) devices
•  Outdoor anchor building experience and leading experience are recommended, but not required

Learning outcomes:
 •  Tying hitches, including friction hitches, releasable and non-releasable rope hitches, and their uses
•  Taking over a top rope belay from the ground
•  Belaying and lowering a climber from the top of a pitch, using both tube-style (ATC) and mechanical assisted braking devices (GriGri, etc.)
•  Multiple ways to assist a stuck climber from the top of a pitch
•  Multiple ways to ascend a rope without specific ascension equipment

Carlin Reynolds

they/them/theirs
@carlin.trustme

Carlin began climbing as soon as they were left unsupervised in central New Jersey, where there are trees instead of rocks. In college they discovered “real” climbing with their school’s competitive team. Soon they were elected captain, ranking among the top 25 collegiate boulderers in 2018. Over the past eight years their climbing career has brought them to the golden Mojave desert and the sunlit granite of the Sierra Nevada.

Their passion is teaching, whether that's technical subjects or helping someone overcome fear on their first rappel. Carlin serves as Technical Director for the all-queer guide service OUT in the Wild. They are an AMGA Apprentice Rock Guide and Single Pitch Instructor, and they hold a B.S. and M.S. from Northeastern University in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science. You can find Carlin in the cheese aisle of the grocery store, or at a trailhead looking for a reason to leave the #4 behind.

Natural and Traditional Anchors

$120 USD

Beginner/Intermediate Trad Climbing

Building secure belay or rappel anchors and making solid gear placements and evaluations provide the foundation of outdoor rock climbing.

In this ground school clinic, you’ll review the principles of anchor construction and understand what makes a solid anchor, focusing on what you can do when fixed hardware (like bolts) are not an option.

We’ll discuss how to use natural features, like trees and boulders, to create anchors. We will also go over traditional climbing gear, how to assess placements, and how to build anchors in a variety of configurations.

Whether you’re interested in refining more of your traditional climbing skills or getting into multi-pitch and/or alpine climbing, it will be a great day focusing on systems that keep us and others safe and having fun out on rock.

Pre-requisites:

None

Prerequisites
1. Some experience top rope climbing is helpful, but not required.

Learning outcomes
1. Have a working knowledge of key equipment, including climbing shoes, harnesses, helmets, chalk, climbing rope, slings/cordelette, carabiners, and belay devices.

Em Pellerin

she/they

@emclimber

Like many young girls growing up in Québec, Emilie dreamed of becoming a figure skater, but she ended up becoming a professional climber instead. Those close to her swear she is actually the reincarnation of a circus monkey. Em’s ability to comfortably hang upside down at a crux makes her belayers exhausted and pumped just watching her. Her tenacity is always inspiring, especially when she sends which happens often.

Happy-go-lucky, Em's outlook on life is nothing short of endearingly earnest. Em is cool, calm and confident even in the most stressful situations; whether it be a thunderstorm or a stuck rope, she finds a solution.
